Weekly News on Saturday 7 October 2023

Exodus 34, our Bible passage for Sunday evening, tells the story of a significant revelation of God to Moses. As the LORD passes by Moses, He proclaims His name: “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.”  God is revealed as first and foremost merciful, gracious, patient, loving and faithful, but also as just.

God’s love and mercy are good news, because they mean that we can be forgiven when we behave in ways that are unloving to God and unloving to one another. God forgives not just once, but he goes on forgiving whenever we turn away from our wrong actions and turn back to Him. Not just seven times, but seven times seventy.

God’s justice is also good news. It’s especially good news for those who are the victims of injustice, oppression and greed. That’s because, as Paul explains in Acts 17:31, God “has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed” (that’s Jesus). Jesus is coming back, and he will right every wrong and bring freedom to those who are oppressed.

God continues to reveal his love, mercy, faithfulness, and justice to us. They are revealed to us in the life of Jesus, the Father’s beloved Son whom he gave because He loved the world so much, and who died, the perfect human, to fulfill God’s righteous judgement on humanity.

Where have you seen God’s mercy, grace, patience, love, faithfulness or justice this week? Take a moment to thank God for that revelation of Himself as you plan your week ahead.

SERVING IN CHURCH

There’s always lots of opportunities to get involved in the mission and ministry of the church and all our activities throughout the week, on evenings, and on Sundays are dependent on volunteers to operate. Volunteers help to set up and tidy up, provide refreshments, assist with (and in many cases run) activities, and keep our churchyard mowed and tidy.

Serving on a team is also a great way to get to know other members of the church family. If you don’t currently serve on a team at church and would like to, please do contact Damian or Andrew for a chat about where you might best fit.
