Weekly News on Saturday 4 May 2024

Do you ever ponder how much you are loved? The Lord Jesus said to his disciples “as the Father has loved me, so have I loved you.” Isn’t that amazing! The quality and depth with which God the Father loves his Son is the same quality and depth with which Jesus, God the Son, loves you. Wow! We’ll be exploring that theme tomorrow in the morning services.

Will you be there? Are you coming? Here’s a reminder of the service times…

Irene Fish

It is with sadness to inform the church family that Irene Fish died recently. Irene was a church member, a child of God, and a believer in the Lord. We take deep comfort in the knowledge that her Saviour has called her home into His presence.

Her funeral will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday 22nd May at Christ Church, followed by 3:30 PM at Carleton Crematorium. Please do keep Mandy and the rest of Irene’s family and friends in your prayers.

Clerestory Windows Good news! After a long process of planning, fund raising and obtaining the needed permissions, the side windows in Church are being replaced in the two weeks starting Monday 13th May. These new windows will help to improve the insulation in Church, avoid water coming in, and will replace the old sun-damaged panes. A huge thank you to everybody that has given toward this work.

This does mean that Church and the Chapel will not be available for use mid-week during the works. Sundays will go ahead as normal as well as the concert on Saturday 18th May. The following activities will not run the weeks starting 13th and 20th May:

  • The Pilgrim’s Rest.
  • Craft and Chat.
  • Wednesday Growth Group.
  • Wednesday Holy Communion.

Lyrics and Lunch will go ahead but with the lyrics part in the hall. The funeral of Irene Fish (see above) will be held in Church on the Wednesday of the second week of the work. All activities in the hall will continue as normal.

Annual Parochial Church Meeting

To fulfil the relevant procedures and regulations, here are the official notices:

Notice of the Annual Meeting of Parishioners (where Churchwardens are elected) is HERE.
Notice of the APCM is HERE.

Our 2024 APCM will be on the evening of Thursday 16th May beginning at 5:30 PM. We’re looking to have as many people attend as possible! This will be a celebration to God of all that happens in the life of Christ Church Thornton.

The evening consists of two official meetings, firstly the Meeting of Parishioners (known as the ‘Vestry Meeting’ where Churchwardens are elected) and the APCM where the financial statements and annual reports are presented and members of the laity are elected to serve on the PCC (and every three years the Deanery Synod.).

Please do attend if you can, as this is an important annual meeting giving an overview of the previous year and looking forward to the year to come. This APCM will be suitable for all ages, so do come along as a family. We will start with the election of Churchwardens at 5:30 PM. Then we will move onto the Annual Meeting of Parishioners at 5:35 PM, which will start with prayer, a song of worship, then a buffet, after which a representative from each congregation will share some highlights of the ministry and mission during 2023. Amidst all this will be the official components which make up the APCM, including the annual reports, financial statements, elections and appointments.

At the APCM we have four places for a three-year term on the PCC and one place for a two-year term on the PCC (this is called a ‘casual vacancy’). Nomination forms are available to download and print here:

  • A nomination form for election to the PCC can be downloaded using this link HERE.
  • A nomindation form for Churchwarden can be downloaded using this link HERE.

Nomination Forms must be submitted before or at the meeting. For more information about eligibility to serve on the PCC (and in future years the Deanery Synod) and the nominations and election process, please do get in touch with me. Please pray that God will equip and call people to these important roles to serve and lead His Church.

Archdeacon’s Fylde Deaneries Visitation – volunteers needed

Christ Church is fast developing a reputation in the diocese as a place of great welcome and hospitality. This is all down to the work of fantastic volunteers who help serve at the various events we have hosted.

On Tuesday 11th June 7:30 PM we will be hosting the Archdeacon’s Fylde Deaneries Visitation, a service where Church Wardens for all of the parishes of the Fylde are commissioned. Could you be on the hospitality team to serve refreshments and welcome those attending? Email andrew@christchurchthornton.uk for more details.

Coach Trip to Consecration Service of the Bishop of Burnley at York Minster

We are thinking of putting on a coach trip to York on Friday 19th July 2024 to attend the Consecration Service of the new Bishop of Burnley, the Rev. Dr. Joe Kennedy, at York Minster. The Service starts at 11am and we aim to be seated by 10:45am at the latest. We will probably leave Christ Church around 8/8:30am and get back home for around 9:30/10pm  so there will be plenty of time for you to have a look round the Minster, take in the sights, have a stroll down the Shambles, look at the markets and have a bite to eat. The cost will be in the region of £15 each.

We’ve had some expression of interest but need more for it to go ahead.  Please email Sally at: burnaze6@googlemail.com as soon as possible to express your interest to make sure that the trip goes ahead.

Treehouse Weekend Away

The third Treehouse Weekend Away takes place from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th October 2024. It will be at Thornleigh Christian Hotel at Grange-over-Sands. We hope to have all the accommodation at the Hotel in use just for the Treehouse congregation, with many families enjoying a weekend away growing in faith through worship, prayer, Bible teaching, alongside great food, walks out, and fun times together. A letter with more information will be available in due course. For now, keep those dates free if you’re interested in going.

Volunteers Needed

We are in need of volunteers on Fridays and other days to help with The Pilgrim’s Rest, The Marriage Course and putting away food deliveries. Can you help? Email andrew@christchurchthornton.uk

Serving in Church

There’s always lots of opportunities to get involved in the mission and ministry of the church and all our activities throughout the week, on evenings, and on Sundays are dependent on volunteers to operate. Volunteers help to set up and tidy up, provide refreshments, assist with (and in many cases run) activities, and keep our churchyard mowed and tidy.

Serving on a team is also a great way to get to know other members of the church family. If you don’t currently serve on a team at church and would like to, please do contact Damian or Andrew for a chat about where you might best fit.

Giving to God

There are numerous ways to give to God and contribute to the mission and ministry of Christ Church:

  • By dated giving envelopes (on request)
  • By contactless machine at the back of Church (or sometimes positioned in the Pilgrim’s Rest or the Community Centre)
  • Online giving – you can give online HERE
  • Text message – simply text SUNDAY to 70460 to donate £10. Texts cost £10 plus one standard rate message which will be added to your mobile phone bill
  • Cash in the collection plate (positioned on the font)

Bank transfer or standing order is the preferred method of giving as they do not have any processing fees attached. Tax payers can add Gift Aid to their gift. More information about this can be found on the website HERE.

Damian’s sabbatical

A note from Damian… in 16 days from now I will start my sabbatical. It will start on Monday 20th May 2024 and finish at the end of Saturday 31st August 2024. With all this in mind and being conscious that I am going to be away from Christ Church for quite a significant time, I have set up some appointment times in my calendar between now and when the sabbatical starts. This is so that adults have opportunity to have a conversation, ask a burning question, or finalise some planning. Often those sorts of conversations happen in passing or on a Sunday. Or it might be people would like pastoral support, help with discipleship, or to receive Easter-season communion at home because of illness.

To make an appointment please click on this link: book an appointment with Damian.

If this is the first you’ve heard about the sabbatical because you’ve only recently signed up to receive the weekly news, you can find out more about the sabbatical using this link HERE.

With blessings,

Damian & Andrew
