Weekly News on Saturday 17 February 2024

This Sunday we will be looking at the covenant God made with Noah, and the rainbow that he placed in the sky as a sign of that covenant. A covenant is more than a promise or a contract, it’s a partnership, an agreement of love and commitment between two people, or between people and God.

When Jesus instituted Holy Communion, breaking bread and sharing wine with his disciples, he described the wine as “blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins” (Matthew 26:26-28). When we share communion we’re reminded of that new covenant, that partnership and commitment between us and God that He forgives us, He loves us, and He promises us eternal life.

Covenants are an important theme in the Bible. You can read more about them in this article by The Bible Project: The Five Key Covenants God Makes With Humans in the Bible.

COACH TRIP TO RIPON

Damian is running a coach trip to the Cathedral City of Ripon – would you like to come too? It’s on Friday 15th March 2024 and costs only £15!

There will be an opportunity to explore Ripon at your own leisure. Or perhaps you would like to come to the free group tour at Ripon Cathedral?

Glorious Ripon Cathedral will surprise you. With free entry you can explore this beautiful medieval cathedral and its intriguing Anglo-Saxon crypt, dating from 672AD. It’s the oldest structure of any cathedral in England still in use today.

Find unusual treasures of art and design at every turn, some of which are thought to have inspired ‘The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland.’ Soak up the cathedral’s breath-taking architecture and discover a unique oasis of peace in a busy world.

You could also experience the life of the poor and the prisoners at the Workhouse Museum, the Prison and Police Museum, and the Courthouse Museum. Or we could look to arrange transport for you to visit Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Park.

Damian is exploring the possibility for a group to go on a private narrowboat cruise on the Pride of Ripon on the Ripon Canal. So much to choose from!

The coach will be setting off from Christ Church Thornton at 8:30 AM, arriving in Ripon around 10:30 AM. The coach will leave Ripon at 4:30 PM, arriving back at Christ Church around 6:30 PM, traffic dependent.

You can book and pay for your place using this link HERE.

SPRING CLEAN

On Saturday 13th April from 9 AM to Noon we will be having a spring clean of the Church and Community Centre Hall. These regular cleaning days are essential in keeping the building clean and we really appreciate those who regularly volunteer. If you’ve never been before, why not give it a try? It’s a great way to meet people in church in other congregations, plus a chance to burn some of those Easter Egg calories!

Please sign up HERE.

THE MARRIAGE COURSE

We will be running The Marriage Course 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Friday lunchtimes starting 19th April 2024. The Marriage Course is a series of seven weekly sessions, designed to help couples invest in their relationship and build a strong marriage. Each week includes a hot meal, a video, and discussion time with your spouse or spouse-to-be.

Download this PDF information sheet for full details including costs:
The Marriage Course – 2024 Information Sheet.pdf

To make the course happen, I need a small team of kitchen volunteers who are available from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM on a Friday to cook and serve the meals for the couples attending the course.

Please email Andrew if you are interested in attending or helping in the kitchen.

SERVING IN CHURCH

There’s always lots of opportunities to get involved in the mission and ministry of the church and all our activities throughout the week, on evenings, and on Sundays are dependent on volunteers to operate. Volunteers help to set up and tidy up, provide refreshments, assist with (and in many cases run) activities, and keep our churchyard mowed and tidy.

Serving on a team is also a great way to get to know other members of the church family. If you don’t currently serve on a team at church and would like to, please do contact Damian or Andrew for a chat about where you might best fit.
