CHAPEL BEING PAINTED

This week a group of young people aged 16-25 years working with The Prince’s Trust have been painting our chapel as a community project. The project is aimed at improving their confidence, motivation, and skills. The Prince’s Trust offer opportunities for both unemployed and employed young people to receive work experience, careers advice, qualifications, challenging projects, community action, and an action-packed team building week-long residential.

The painting should finish by Wednesday 14th February and will be followed by a Project Handover Presentation at 11:00am on Friday 16th February in Church. The young people have invited their families and it would be lovely if many members of the church community could also be there to express our thanks and appreciation for all the time and hard work that the young people have volunteered.

While the chapel is being painted, The Pilgrim’s Rest will take place in the side aisle of Church on the usual days and at the usual times, apart from on a Wednesday when it will need to finish in time to coincide with the start of the holy communion service at 11:15 AM.

2024 COACH TRIPS

Advance notice of the coach trips planned for 2024:

  • Friday 15th March: Ripon (shops, Cathedral, boat tour)
  • Friday 2nd August: Keswick (Convention)
  • Friday 13th December: Chester (Christmas markets, Cathedral)

COACH TRIP TO RIPON

Damian is running a coach trip to the Cathedral City of Ripon – would you like to come too? It’s on Friday 15th March 2024 and costs only £15!

There will be an opportunity to explore Ripon at your own leisure. Or perhaps you would like to come to the free group tour at Ripon Cathedral?

Glorious Ripon Cathedral will surprise you. With free entry you can explore this beautiful medieval cathedral and its intriguing Anglo-Saxon crypt, dating from 672AD. It’s the oldest structure of any cathedral in England still in use today.

Find unusual treasures of art and design at every turn, some of which are thought to have inspired ‘The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland.’ Soak up the cathedral’s breath-taking architecture and discover a unique oasis of peace in a busy world.

You could also experience the life of the poor and the prisoners at the Workhouse Museum, the Prison and Police Museum, and the Courthouse Museum. Or we could look to arrange transport for you to visit Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Park.

Damian is exploring the possibility for a group to go on a private narrowboat cruise on the Pride of Ripon on the Ripon Canal. So much to choose from!

The coach will be setting off from Christ Church Thornton at 8:30 AM, arriving in Ripon around 10:30 AM. The coach will leave Ripon at 4:30 PM, arriving back at Christ Church around 6:30 PM, traffic dependent.

You can book and pay for your place using this link HERE.

SPRING CLEAN

On Saturday 13th April from 9 AM to Noon we will be having a spring clean of the Church and Community Centre Hall. These regular cleaning days are essential in keeping the building clean and we really appreciate those who regularly volunteer. If you’ve never been before, why not give it a try? It’s a great way to meet people in church in other congregations, plus a chance to burn some of those Easter Egg calories!

Please sign up HERE.

THE MARRIAGE COURSE

We will be running The Marriage Course 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Friday lunchtimes starting 19th April 2024. The Marriage Course is a series of seven weekly sessions, designed to help couples invest in their relationship and build a strong marriage. Each week includes a hot meal, a video, and discussion time with your spouse or spouse-to-be.

Download this PDF information sheet for full details including costs:
The Marriage Course – 2024 Information Sheet.pdf

To make the course happen, I need a small team of kitchen volunteers who are available from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM on a Friday to cook and serve the meals for the couples attending the course.

Please email Andrew if you are interested in attending or helping in the kitchen.

2024 Core Catechism Classes have started!

These classes are designed to equip Christians with the tools to understand more firmly why they believe what they believe. Using the ancient method of catechesis, the Core Catechism Classes (designed by Damian) will teach the foundational doctrines of Christianity, carefully tracing the story of the one true God as revealed in Scripture.

Core Catechism Classes run in-between the Sunday morning services from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM, enabling people attending from either morning congregation to come. They run in the Community Centre Hall with tea and coffee available on arrival.

Topics will include: Church History, Creation, Creeds, 39 Articles, Bible Overview, Heresies, Baptism, Holy Communion, The Holy Spirit, Spiritual Gifts, Reliability of the Bible.

It’s not a long book and is very easy to read. Then come along and we’ll have a chat about what we’ve read (or just listen if you prefer!). You’re most welcome to join us for an informal, fun but inspirational evening together.

Please confirm your attendance by signing up HERE.

A letter with more information will be available in due course. For now, keep those dates free if you’re interested in going.

For members of other congregations, a three-day stay at Thornleigh Hotel is also being planned for 2024. More details to follow when they are available.

SERVING IN CHURCH

There’s always lots of opportunities to get involved in the mission and ministry of the church and all our activities throughout the week, on evenings, and on Sundays are dependent on volunteers to operate. Volunteers help to set up and tidy up, provide refreshments, assist with (and in many cases run) activities, and keep our churchyard mowed and tidy.

Serving on a team is also a great way to get to know other members of the church family. If you don’t currently serve on a team at church and would like to, please do contact Damian or Andrew for a chat about where you might best fit.
