Weekly News on Friday 8 March 2024

This Sunday is Mothering Sunday! Did you know that originally Mothering Sunday is when Christians returned home to their ‘mother church,’ to the church where they were grew up, were baptised and taught the Christian faith? It was an opportunity to give thanks to God for the influence of the mother church. Although Mothering Sunday has evolved, it is still an opportunity to be thankful for the churches and those who influenced our faith in our formative years.

Our Bible passage on Sunday points us to the one who sets the best example of honouring mothers and those with parental responsibilities. Whilst nailed to a wooden cross suffering immense pain, Jesus saw his mother there and found the strength to tell his mother that the disciple John would now take care of her as if she were his own mother. Jesus showed such love and respect for his mother in ensuring her needs would be taken care of following his death.

Do join us on Sunday as we celebrate mothers, those present and those who have gone before us.

For the 11:00 AM service is available HERE.

A QUIET PLACE TO PRAY Did you know that Church is open for quiet prayer and reflection during the week? In fact, any time there’s an activity in the Hall but not in Church, Church can be used for quiet prayer and reflection. And because Damian, Andrew and others often work from Church, it’s often open at times when there’s no activities as well. This means that you can often just pop in on any afternoon and you’ll find a quiet space to pray. However, if you want to plan ahead, here’s a selection of just some of the times when most weeks there’s activities in the Hall but not in Church:

  • Mondays 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM during Bowl & Chat.
  • Thursdays 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM during Bat & Chat.
  • Fridays 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM during Move & Chat (Not running during March).

Please check the calendar of events at the end of this email for details of what is running each week.

BARRY HOLT

It is with sadness to inform you that Mr Barry Holt passed away this week. Barry, along with his wife Gillian, have been both church members and a huge part of Lyrics and Lunch on a Monday. Barry always had a twinkle in his eye, the offer of a handshake, and always enjoyed a brief dance and sing to Banjo Bob’s music. We’ll really miss Barry but give thanks to God for the opportunity to have Barry as part of the church family in recent years. Please do pray for Gillian and her family in the depth of their grief. Once the funeral arrangements are known we will include them on a weekly news email.

CHRIST CHURCH THORNTON FOOTBALL CLUB

Last week the men’s football team were victorious with a 4-0 win against St. James Gatley. It was a great match played with good sportsmanship and skill on display! This win means they are through to the quarter finals and will be playing again at 11:00 AM on Saturday 16th March at Poolfoot Farm.

Supporters are needed and welcome! Look out for the team playing in the bright yellow shirts!

In the Hall afterwards the football team will be invited back for refreshments and time to celebrate the match together. If you’d like to be involved in helping with this, please do get in touch.

FAMILY TEATIME COOKERY CLASSES

Right now as this email is being sent, the Family Teatime Cookery Class is taking place, with around 20 people enjoying making food together and enjoying each others’ company. After tonight they will run on Friday 15th March and Friday 22nd March from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and then break until Friday 19th April.  Please sign up  HERE. It would be hugely helpful if people can book in by a Wednesday evening, as the volunteers go shopping for the food on a Thursday morning.

MOVE & CHAT

Move & Chat will not run in March. It resumes on Friday 5th April.

COACH TRIP TO RIPON

Last chance to book on the coach trip to the Cathedral City of Ripon. It’s on Friday 15th March 2024 and costs only £15!

There is a opportunity for a brief canal cruise at the cost of £5 per person. This begins just a 200 yard walk from the Cathedral. There will be two journeys as the boat can take 12 passengers at a time.

An organised group tour of the Cathedral is available at £10 per person (this is the price the Cathedral charge). Apologies that when first advertised a ‘free tour of the Cathedral’ was advertised – it seems that no longer happens. However, entry to the Cathedral is free and people are welcome to look around on their own or to take up the offer of a paid tour which is conducted in small groups.

At 12:00 PM at the Cathedral there is a Eucharist for anyone who might like to attend. The Cathedral will be grateful to know the numbers for this,.

An email to those going on the trip will be sent separately to give you chance to indicate your desire to book on the boat trip, Cathedral tour and Eucharist.

The coach will be setting off from Christ Church Thornton at 8:30 AM, arriving in Ripon around 10:30 AM. The coach will leave Ripon at 4:30 PM, arriving back at Christ Church around 6:30 PM, traffic dependent.

You can book and pay for your place using this link HERE.

DIOCESAN CLERGY STUDY DAY

Christ Church Thornton are hosting one of the Clergy Study Days for the Diocese. It is on Tuesday 19th March, starting at 9:00 AM. Our excellent facilities means we are a popular choice for clergy to visit and enjoy a day of study, fellowship and hospitality. All of the usual activities which take place in the Church and the Community Centre will not be taking place that day, with the exception of the Meadows Books which will be open during the hours of the Clergy Study Day.

70 people are currently booked in for the Study Day. They will be enjoying tea and coffee on arrival, other drinks breaks, a hot lunch, worship and study. Due to the sheer number of people attending, an extra special effort is needed to cater for this many people. Volunteers will be welcome who can contribute just an hour or two, or for the whole day (approximately 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM).

If you can help, please fill out this form HERE to indicate what you can help with.

SPRING CLEAN

On Saturday 13th April from 9:00 AM to Noon we will be having a spring clean of the Church and Community Centre Hall. These regular cleaning days are essential in keeping the building clean and we really appreciate those who regularly volunteer. If you’ve never been before, why not give it a try? It’s a great way to meet people in church in other congregations, plus a chance to burn some of those Easter Egg calories! Please sign up HERE.

THE MARRIAGE COURSE

We will be running The Marriage Course 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Friday lunchtimes starting 19th April 2024. The Marriage Course is a series of seven weekly sessions, designed to help couples invest in their relationship and build a strong marriage. Each week includes a hot meal, a video, and discussion time with your spouse or spouse-to-be.

Download this PDF information sheet for full details including costs:
The Marriage Course – 2024 Information Sheet.pdf

To make the course happen, I need a small team of kitchen volunteers who are available from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM on a Friday to cook and serve the meals for the couples attending the course.

Please email Andrew if you are interested in attending or helping in the kitchen.

FIRST AID TRAINING

Christ Church is hosting First Aid Training on the evening of Friday 26th April 2024 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM . This two hour training session covers basic first aid and is recommended to be refreshed every year. The session is open to anybody who wants to book and costs £26 per person (including £1 booking fee). The session is limited to 16 people, but we can arrange addition sessions if we fill up. BOOK HERE.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON HALL SET UP TEAM AND TREEHOUSE SIDESPERSON NEEDED

After the 11 AM service, from around 12:15 PM we offer drinks and fellowship in the hall which is an important time of fellowship for church members and visitors to get to know one another in an informal setting after the service. Then, at 5PM the hall is used (with a completely different configuration of sofas and tables) for our Treehouse Family Service, which is a vital part of our mission to disciple children, young people and their families. These two activities are dependent on the furniture in the hall being rearranged on a Sunday afternoon, a task currently undertaken by Damian and Andrew.

We are looking to recruit a team of 2 to 4 volunteers who could take on the task of rearranging the hall on a Sunday afternoon. This would either be at 1:15 PM to 1:45 PM or 4:00 PM to 4:30 PM, dependent on volunteer availability. We would like to have this team in place as soon as possible, and ideally before the sabbatical in order to avoid any impact on these two vital activities.

Additionally, we are keen to recruit a Treehouse Sidesperson or Sidespeople to serve during the 5 PM Treehouse service. The Treehouse Sidesperson would be responsible for recording a count of the number of people who attend the service and for sitting in the porch during the service to welcome any late-comers and ensure the security of the building. This would mean not attending the Treehouse service yourself, so we are looking for somebody who is a regular attender at one of the other services who could come to Treehouse in addition in order to serve.

Can you help? Speak to Andrew or email andrew@christchurchthornton.uk

CORE CATECHISM CLASSES
Getting to grips with why we believe what we believe!

The current topics are the attributes of God, looking at subjects such as the self-existence of God and the unchangeable nature of God.

These classes are designed to equip Christians with the tools to understand more firmly why they believe what they believe. Using the ancient method of catechesis, the Core Catechism Classes (designed by Damian) will teach the foundational doctrines of Christianity, carefully tracing the story of the one true God as revealed in Scripture.

Core Catechism Classes run in-between the Sunday morning services from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM (sometimes starting later than 10:00 and finishing at 10:55 AM) enabling people attending from either morning congregation to come. They run in the Community Centre Hall with tea and coffee available on arrival.

Topics include: Church History, Creation, Creeds, 39 Articles, Bible Overview, Heresies, Baptism, Holy Communion, The Holy Spirit, Spiritual Gifts, Reliability of the Bible.

Bank transfer or standing order is the preferred method of giving as they do not have any processing fees attached. Tax payers can add Gift Aid to their gift. More information about this can be found on the website HERE.

SERVING IN CHURCH

There’s always lots of opportunities to get involved in the mission and ministry of the church and all our activities throughout the week, on evenings, and on Sundays are dependent on volunteers to operate. Volunteers help to set up and tidy up, provide refreshments, assist with (and in many cases run) activities, and keep our churchyard mowed and tidy.

Serving on a team is also a great way to get to know other members of the church family. If you don’t currently serve on a team at church and would like to, please do contact Damian or Andrew for a chat about where you might best fit.
