Weekly News on Friday 8 December 2023

“Tonight’s events were planned in heaven,
The greatest story ever penned.
Heaven and earth have come together,
And life has come to Bethlehem.”

Today we’ve had nearly 400 children from Thornton Primary and Royles Brook, along with teachers, parents, grandparents and others for school Christingle services. The children have been busy making Christingles in their classes this week from oranges, red tape, cocktail sticks, sweets and glow-sticks provided by Christ Church, while practicing their carols and readings ready for today’s services. One of the songs, “Midnight”, tells the familiar story of Shepherds, Angels and Wise Men, the “greatest story ever penned”.

As we prepare for Christmas in a couple of weeks, let’s not lose the child-like wonder of how amazing the story that we hold is. That the Word of God, who was with God in the beginning and who is God, through whom everything was made, came in human flesh as a baby in a manger. “Heaven and earth have come together”,  and that the life that is the light of mankind, that “life has come to Bethlehem”.

ALPHA SPRING TERM

We had a fantastic time at Alpha this term, with over 20 guests attending each week to explore foundations of Christian faith. One of our guests this term said this: “I’m really enjoying Alpha and appreciate all the hard work and organisation that’s gone into it. I’ve met some lovely people too. Thank you.”

Next term, Alpha will run on a Tuesday morning between Playhouse and lunch (11:15 AM – 1:00 PM) from Tuesday 16th January through to the week of Tuesday 30th April with breaks for half-term and Easter. We’ve got 500 postcard invitations to give out over December, so please do take some to give to family, friends, neighbours and colleagues.

We are hoping to run a small creche for 30 minutes each week during the video to enable parents and grandparents from Playhouse to attend.

Could you volunteer to help with the creche or in the kitchen? Speak to Andrew or email andrew@christchurchthornton.uk.

Or, if you would like to attend Alpha next term, you can book here: christchurchthornton.uk/alpha

SERVING IN CHURCH

There’s always lots of opportunities to get involved in the mission and ministry of the church and all our activities throughout the week, on evenings, and on Sundays are dependent on volunteers to operate. Volunteers help to set up and tidy up, provide refreshments, assist with (and in many cases run) activities, and keep our churchyard mowed and tidy.

Serving on a team is also a great way to get to know other members of the church family. If you don’t currently serve on a team at church and would like to, please do contact Damian or Andrew for a chat about where you might best fit.
