Weekly News on Friday 26 January 2024

I’ve been away on residential training this week, and one of the sessions explored the ideas of worship, God’s presence and the temple. Drawing on this great video from The Bible Project, the speaker outlined how the seven instructions given to Moses for construction of the tabernacle in Exodus (each beginning with “Then the Lord said to Moses”) map to the seven days of creation in Genesis 1, and how the concepts of temple and creation overlap.

What I found especially fascinating was that the third instruction in Exodus 30:17-21 (mapped to the third day of creation) is about the basins for ceremonial washing which placed outside the tent of meeting, the place where God’s presence dwells, for those who enter to be washed so that they do not die. Remember in last week’s gospel, John 2:1-12, how the wedding at Cana in Galilee happened on the third day, and how Jesus turns the water meant for ceremonial washing into the best wine saved until last?

This drives home the point made at the end of John 1, that Jesus is the gate of heaven on whom the angels of God ascend and descend. But He’s not just the gate for angels, He is the way by which we are able to enter into God’s presence and live, our sins washed away not by water of ceremonial washing, but by the best wine saved until last, by his blood shed for us on the cross.

SERVING IN CHURCH

There’s always lots of opportunities to get involved in the mission and ministry of the church and all our activities throughout the week, on evenings, and on Sundays are dependent on volunteers to operate. Volunteers help to set up and tidy up, provide refreshments, assist with (and in many cases run) activities, and keep our churchyard mowed and tidy.

Serving on a team is also a great way to get to know other members of the church family. If you don’t currently serve on a team at church and would like to, please do contact Damian or Andrew for a chat about where you might best fit.
