Weekly News on Friday 25 November 2022

Dear Church Community,

Hello everyone,

This Sunday in the Church calendar is ‘Advent.’ It marks the start of the liturgical year. The first ‘advent’ (‘coming’) saw the Son of God put on flesh and dwell among us. At the first Easter that same flesh was beaten, scourged and nailed to the cross to settle the demands of our sin. The second advent is still to come. And as we recite each Sunday in the Apostle’s Creed, “he will come to judge the living and the dead.” Advent is a time of longing and anticipation. As we celebrate the wondrous first advent, we anticipate the second with great longing and excitement.

Joining us this Advent Sunday is Revd Steve Haskett, Director of the Life Association. Their mission is to reach and serve the poorest of the poor, with the hope and love of Jesus, in word and deed. Their focus is on children, who are always those most affected by poverty. All their projects are in India and are run by local churches and Christian leaders, so that local people are empowered to deal with the problems particular to their own areas.

Steve will be speaking to us following his recent trip to India, where he has seen the need on the ground and has experienced the life-changing projects in action. At Christ Church Thornton, Life Association is the first of our ‘Global Mission Partners’ which we are supporting financially and prayerfully.

TREE LIGHTING SERVICE

——————————-

On Sunday 4th December at 5:00 PM we are looking forward to lighting up the Christmas tree in the car park. We’ll be joined by Bispham Silver Band and Ye Merry Meadows Carollers. There will be carols around the outdoor tree and lovely mince pies and hot chocolate. A fun occasion for all ages. The tree lighting will be a moment of excitement for children! Wrap up warm! One child from the Treehouse service will be given the special job of pressing the button to turn on the lights. Who will it be!

We are awaiting delivery of 2,500 leaflets to be posted through local letterboxes. Each leaflet will give details of Christmas services and events, as well as give a glimpse of all that goes on through the week at Christ Church. You can have a glimpse of the leaflet by clicking on this link HERE. Do make note of all that’s taking place – put things in your diary!

CHRIST CHURCH THORTON FOOTBALL CLUB

——————————-

Our next match is a home match, being played at Poolfoot Farm. We are playing a team from Quernmore. Christ Church FC are currently unbeaten, having won our first two matches in the Church Cup 7-3 and 8-2. Our team player-manager is Dean Whybrow and he is our top scorer with four goals to his name so far.

So now we need some support! Come on down to our next match on Saturday 3rd December for kick-off at 1:30 PM.

FOOD PANTRY – THANK YOU!

——————————-

We continue to be so blessed by God. Literally every time food is given out to those in need, even more food is given. It’s no accident – God knows what He is doing! Thank you to you all for your kindness.

——————————-

BLANKETS

——————————-

One or two people who we deliver food to each week are in need of some blankets to help them during the cold weather. If you can help, please speak to Ann Hearnshaw. Please don’t bring any blankets into Church, as we may be inundated with too many and with nowhere to store them. So please have a chat with Ann first and take things from there. Thank you.

——————————-

To finish our weekly news tonight, here is the special prayer for this coming Sunday…

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and to put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility; that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. AMEN.

With love and blessings,

Damian
