Weekly News on Friday 22 March 2024

This week has been a busy week at Christ Church with about 80 clergy and church staff attending on Tuesday for a Clergy Study Day. We were reminded by the to speakers to look after our congregations, to think entrepreneurially, and to value our humanity: Super Priest does not exist! Those are important messages for all of us, not just clergy. We are all to look after one another, we are all to look for new opportunities to share the good news about Jesus, and all of us are humans with limited capacity.

That’s why it’s important as a Church that we include everybody in the work of ministry. And those that are involved in serving often find that it helps them to connect with others and grow in faith.

If you’re not currently serving in Church, why not start? Have a chat with somebody who does a job you think you could try and find out how to get more involved!

And if you are already serving, remember that you’re not Super Volunteer! Who could you involve and include in ministry this week?

Volunteers Needed for Food Deliveries and The Pilgrim’s Rest

Are you available mid-week to help us provide food and hot drinks to our community?

We need volunteers to help with the food deliveries on a Tuesday and Friday lunchtime from 12 noon to 2pm. This is to help organize the freezers and shelves in preparation for the food delivery, help checking the stock levels, and put away the food delivery when it arrives.

We also need more volunteers to help run Pilgrim’s Rest on weekday mornings.  This involves setting up from 9:30 AM, serving teas and coffees, and being there to chat to people from 10:00 AM, and washing up afterwards from Noon.

Growth Groups – Mini-Break

Family Teatime Cookery Classes

The Family Teatime Cookery Class runs each Friday, with around 20 people enjoying making food together and enjoying each others’ company. They will run tonight, Friday 22nd March from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and then break until Friday 19th April. Please sign up for 22nd March HERE. It would be hugely helpful if people can book in by a Wednesday evening, as the volunteers go shopping for the food on a Thursday morning.

Sanctuary Youth on Sunday 24th March instead of Sunday 31st March

Sanctuary Youth normally meets on the last Sunday of each month after Treehouse 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, for young people (school year 6 and upwards) to play games, hang out and eat together. This month, the last Sunday is Easter Day, so Sanctuary will instead run on this Sunday: Sunday 24th March.

Services for Holy Week and Easter…

Sunday 24th March (Palm Sunday)

  • 10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon The People’s Passion – a live Passion Play in Church (with worship, teaching and holy communion).

In this service we will be telling the Easter story through an interactive powerful act of theatre and worship. Like last year, The People’s Passion will tell the story of Jesus’ last week before the crucifixion. We’ll need some volunteers for a few key characters (including Jesus and a narrator) and everyone else to be a willing congregation. All the dialogue is read by the congregation who will be divided into six groups and together, reading from a projected script, will play all the characters – a chorus of voices in unison taking us from the noisy crowd cheering Jesus on his entry into Jerusalem, to Calvary and through the moving drama of the crucifixion. For more information please speak to Roger Lloyd Jones. There will be a rehearsal on Saturday 23rd March at 6:00 PM in Church for those willing to take on roles.

Please note the 10:00 AM service replaces the usual morning services on this day. Treehouse will take place at 5:00 PM as normal.

Thursday 28th March (Maundy Thursday)

  • 6:00 PM – Maundy Thursday Simple Supper (soup, bread, salad and water) & Service of Holy Communion (Community Centre & Church).

Friday 29th March (Good Friday)

  • 10:00 AM – Easter Explained! Come to a fun event where families can enjoy time together and explore the true meaning of Easter. With crafts, games and food. Why not come to find out why Good Friday is so good and to discover the wonderful surprise of the first Easter! (Community Centre Hall)
  • 11:30 AM – Walk of Witness (from Christ Church to Four Lane Ends) followed by Churches Together in Thornton Service
  • 12:00 Noon – Churches Together in Thornton Service (outside the Little Theatre at Four Land Ends), followed by a walk back to Church
  • 1:00 PM – Picnic in the Community Centre Hall/Outside Church if good weather (bring your own lunch and drinks – ice cream provided!)
  • 2:00 PM – 60-minute Service of Reflection, looking at the last words of Jesus before he died (Church)

Saturday 30th March (Holy Saturday)

  • 10:00 AM Easter Day Celebration Service (Church & Community Centre Hall) *see the info below*

Easter Day Celebration

The Easter Day Celebration is an opportunity to bring all the congregations together as one big church family. It will be carefully planned so as to incorporate aspects familiar to each congregation. There will be a mix of traditional and contemporary hymns. There will be liturgy from The Book of Common Prayer and modern sources. There will be some lovely refreshments on arrival in the Community Centre Hall, so as to give opportunity for coming together as a church family for conversation and deepening relationships with one another. Part-way during the service children of primary school age will be invited to attend their own age-appropriate teaching and activities. The service will culminate in remembering the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus as we receive holy communion together. After the service, there will be another opportunity for refreshments in the Community Centre Hall, if you have time to stay – however we appreciate some will need to be making tracks at this point.

The Easter Day Celebration starts at 10:00 AM and we aim to finish by 12:00 Noon.

Spring Clean

On Saturday 13th April from 9:00 AM to Noon we will be having a spring clean of the Church and Community Centre Hall. These regular cleaning days are essential in keeping the building clean and we really appreciate those who regularly volunteer. If you’ve never been before, why not give it a try? It’s a great way to meet people in church in other congregations, plus a chance to burn some of those Easter Egg calories!

Serving in Church

There’s always lots of opportunities to get involved in the mission and ministry of the church and all our activities throughout the week, on evenings, and on Sundays are dependent on volunteers to operate. Volunteers help to set up and tidy up, provide refreshments, assist with (and in many cases run) activities, and keep our churchyard mowed and tidy.

Serving on a team is also a great way to get to know other members of the church family. If you don’t currently serve on a team at church and would like to, please do contact Damian or Andrew for a chat about where you might best fit.
