Weekly News on Friday 1 September 2023

This Sunday is our Alpha Sunday, where we’ll be focusing on mission, and in particular the Alpha Course which is running 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM on Wednesdays starting Wednesday 13th September. Alpha is an introduction to Christian faith which includes a tasty meal with friendly people, a short video on topics such as ‘Who is Jesus?’ and ‘Why did Jesus die?’, and then a chance to express your own views and opinions in a small discussion group. It’s a great course to invite a friend along to if they are open minded to exploring what they believe about God and Jesus.

If your friends are not ready for Alpha (or even if they are!), why don’t you invite them along to one of the other events happening at Church this term, as a chance to introduce them to other christians and welcome them into the Church building? Bring them to support Christ Church FC this Saturday, come with them and their children to KICK Academy or the Family Teatime Cookery Classes, or invite them to the Men United meal at Tramway. And that’s just events happening this week – see below for even more coming up in the coming months between now and Christmas!

There’s lots going on, lots to be involved in and lots to invite others to. What are you coming to, and who are you inviting?

Andrew

TUESDAY EVENING WORSHIP SERVICE

Our Tuesday Evening Worship Service (TEWS) resume this Tuesday 5th September at 7:30 PM in church. This is a simple service with modern worship songs, a short sermon and an open prayer time. Our long term vision is to grow a congregation that can be planted into Burn Naze, but for the foreseeable future we are meeting in church. All are welcome.

BURN NAZE PLAYHOUSE AND KICK ACADEMY

From 5th September we’re (re-)launching two Tuesday afternoon activities at Thornton Cleveleys Football Club on Gamble Road in Burn Naze. Please do pray for these activities and mention them to people you know, especially if they live in or near Burn Naze.

Playhouse is our drop-in for 0-5s and their parents/carers with toys, songs, Bible story, tea and toast. It runs 2-3 PM every Tuesday.

KICK is a football Academy for Primary School aged children that includes football coaching, a short half-time talk, and a game of football. It’s open to all abilities with the aim of having fun, learning football, promoting Christian values and connecting children to church. It runs 3:45-4:45 PM every Tuesday. Parents are encouraged to stay and watch, and remain responsible for their children at all times.

To give us an idea of numbers and to aid with communication, it would be helpful if children could be registered for KICK, however you can turn up and registered in-person on the day.
You can book Primary School aged children in to KICK Academy HERE.

LEAFLETS – CAN YOU HELP?

FAMILY TEATIME COOKERY CLASSES

Our free Family Teatime Cookery Classes restart after the summer break on Friday 8th September at 5:00 PM in the community hall. Families are guided through preparing some food, share a meal together which we’ve prepared and cooked earlier, and then take their cooking home, along with a second set of ingredients to make it again at home.

The classes are completely free, but it’s helpful if you can book on for each week in advance so that we know how much food to prepare. Book HERE for Friday 8th September.

——————————-

MEN UNITED

The next Men United meal will be at the Tavern at the Mill at 7:30pm on Friday 8th September. This is an ideal event for men to invite a friend to, introduce them to some other men from church, and then invite them on to Alpha starting the following Wednesday.

Speak to John Hearnshaw to book your place.

WEDNESDAY MORNING COMMUNION NEW TIME – 11:15 AM

As our Wednesday morning communion service grows, we’re finding that we are sometimes pushed for time with the start of Lunches for Seniors immediately after. Rather than rush Holy Communion, we’re moving to a new start time of 11:15 AM, immediately after the Wednesday Growth Group.

To give us time to let everybody know, the new time of 11:15 AM will take effect on Wednesday 13th September. Next week’s service (6th September) will start at 11:30 AM as usual.

——————————-

ALPHA

ALPHA is a short course that introduces the basics of Christian faith in a welcoming and engaging way. It includes a tasty meal, a short video on topics like ‘Who is Jesus?’, followed by a friendly discussion where guests are encouraged to express any opinion or ask any question they like. It’s a great course to come on if you’re exploring faith, and a great course to invite a friend to.

We’re running Alpha from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM on a Wednesday evening, starting on 13th September and running until 6th December. This will run alongside with Lighthouse, so the children will join us for the meal, and parents can stay for Alpha while the children are at Lighthouse.

Sign up for Alpha at christchurchthornton.uk/alpha.

‘SCAM ALERT’ INFORMATION EVENING

According to UK Finance statistics £1.2bn was lost to fraud in 2022. This is equivalent to £2,300 every minute of every day. The most common type was card fraud with banks only refunding 59% of losses. But there are many other types of fraud and scams which frequently go unreported. Do you worry about ‘phone calls? Do you worry about text messages? Do you think you know all about scams?

Come along to the Community Hall at 6:30 PM on Thursday 5th October 2023 and let us help you to understand what you should, or should not, be doing. Even if you think you know all about scams, maybe you should come anyway so you can pass on some information to your parents, grandparents or elderly neighbours who may not be able to come. It will all be very informal, but maybe you could learn something you didn’t know before and there will be refreshments available and people to talk to if you’re worried that you may have been or are being scammed right now. For more information, please call or send a text to Sally Johnson 07903 776451 outside working hours.

SERVING IN CHURCH

There’s always lots of opportunities to get involved in the mission and ministry of the church and all our activities throughout the week, on evenings, and on Sundays are dependent on volunteers to operate. Volunteers help to set up and tidy up, provide refreshments, assist with (and in many cases run) activities, and keep our churchyard mowed and tidy.

Serving on a team is also a great way to get to know other members of the church family. If you don’t currently serve on a team at church and would like to, please do contact Damian or Andrew for a chat about where you might best fit.
