Further Weekly News on Saturday 3 September 2022

Dear Church Community,

Hello everyone and good afternoon,

Following on from yesterday’s email, here is some more church news and details of upcoming events and activities. But before we go any further – Men Utd enjoyed a lovely meal out last night – thanks to all who came, around 20 in total. We’ll let you know once the next one is planned.

LIGHTHOUSE

——————————-

Our midweek club for children of primary-school age is starting back on Wednesday 14th September, 5:45 PM to 6:45 PM, in the Community Centre Hall. It will be a fast-moving, fun packed hour, starting with a snack followed by action songs, games and drama – all based around a Christian theme for each week.

On arrival, parents/guardians will be asked by the DBS checked leaders to complete a registration form for their child after which they are welcome to leave and return at 6:45 PM. The Pilgrim’s Rest will be open most weeks for parents and guardians who would prefer to stay for a coffee and chat. For more information, speak to Lauren Platt or email her at lauren@christchurchthornton.uk

YOUTH TOWN HALL

——————————-

Calling all young people, parents, potential youth team! On Sunday 18th September at 6:30 PM (after Treehouse) in the Community Centre Hall, we will be holding an open meeting to share ideas about how to best serve our young people, and welcome other young people from the parish into Church. This is a chance to hear our vision for a Sunday night youth cafe, as well as share your views and experiences of church as a young person. Food will be served including pizza, hash browns, toast and hot chocolate! Please email andrew@christchurchthornton.uk to let Andrew know you are coming, and to express a pizza topping preference! Or just turn up on the night.

LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS

——————————-

We’re welcoming back ‘BLACKPOOL BRASS’ to Christ Church Thornton for a concert on Friday 23rd September at 7:00 PM. Admission is £8 per person, which includes tea and coffee at the interval. It’s three years since Blackpool Brass were last with us and we can still remember what a powerful sound they produced and what an entertaining concert they provided. Do come along if you’re free and spread the word. There’s a poster attached to this email.

ARTS & CRAFT FAYRE

——————————-

On Saturday 1st October, there will be an Arts & Craft Fayre in the Community Centre Hall, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. There will be free entry, with the opportunity to browse a small selection of stalls, pop in for a coffee at the Pilgrim’s Rest, and pop into the newly opened Meadows Books (opens on 14th September at 7:30 PM). If you are interested in running a stall, please speak to Jean Grimshaw. Please note the stalls are focused on arts and crafts (fabric, jewellery, etc) and not general bric-a-brac, food, books, or second hand items.

RETIREMENT

——————————-

We’re very grateful to Lesley Wooding for all she has done in her role at Christ Church over the last three years. Countless numbers of people have been made to feel welcome by her and have been well fed and refreshed during their visits to the Community Centre Hall. Lesley has now retired and will be enjoying a well deserved rest! We thanked Lesley on Tuesday lunchtime. In the 1163 days she has been in her hospitality role for Christ Church, I have worked out she has made around 7,500 portions of soup and 30,000 triangular sandwiches! That’s a lot of people fed and welcomed in the name of Jesus! Lesley would be the first one to stress that many people have helped her – wonderful volunteers, for whom we are very grateful also. Please pray for Lesley, for rest and refreshment – and do thank the Lord for her wonderful service to us in her role.

HOSPITALITY VOLUNTEERS

——————————-

Yes, you’ve guessed it, we need people to fulfill the role Lesley was doing! As a temporary measure, Lauren Platt is stepping into Lesley’s role, to ensure activities can continue as normal. Lauren is doing this in a voluntary capacity. We now need to recruit a team of hospitality volunteers, following which Lauren will turn her focus to developing the children’s ministry. Maybe you can help for an hour, for a few hours, or for a morning? If you’re interested, do get in touch. The roles range from serving refreshments at the Playhouse parent baby and toddler group, to helping prepare hot and cold lunches at the Meadows Luncheon Club. Anyone volunteering will need to undertake an online Food Hygiene Course, go through a Kitchen Familiarisation Session, and attend a training morning looking at the key values of the Community Centre. Being part of such a team is a wonderful way to serve the Lord and to share the love of God through Christian hospitality.

RAINBOWS AND BROWNIES

——————————-

It is with sadness to announce the Girlguiding Units at Christ Church Thornton, the 4th Thornton Rainbows and the 4th Thornton Brownies, are leaving Christ Church. Their new venue is Thornton Methodist Church. For so many years the groups have met at Christ Church, and so many girls have benefited from the life-enhancing activities on offer. Julie Carpenter and Emma Harris and their fellow leaders work very hard all year round to lead the Units and serve the community. We wish them and the girls well in their new venue. For information about the meeting dates, times, new venue and general enquiries, please email: 4ththorntonbrownies@gmail.com

——————————-

I look forward to seeing many seats filled at Church tomorrow as we come together as the family of God to worship the head of our family, the Lord Jesus Christ. As the Bible tells us, Jesus is the image of the invisible God. To know Jesus, is to know God. Whereas no Jesus = no God! So if you can, come and worship Jesus tomorrow and hear him speak to you and shape you. We have services at 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

God bless,

Damian
